Martha B. Bryans has been head of school at Friends School Haverford since 2001.
A graduate of Westtown School and Bryn Mawr College, she holds an M.A. and Ed.D.
from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. She received a Dean’s Fellowship in 1998-2000, assisting in research for an urban elementary school
math project. Her dissertation, Leadership in Friends Schools: The Experiences of School Heads, was published in 2000. She was the 2001 recipient of the Education Alumni Association’s William E. Arnold Award for Outstanding Contributions in a Doctoral Program.
Prior to coming to Friends School Haverford, Martha was Director of Development and Alumni Affairs at Westtown School. Her experience as acting Head of School at Westtown in 1996 prompted her to pursue graduate work in educational leadership. Her dissertation provided a model of leadership development that has been implemented by the Friends Council on Education.
Martha Bryans is active in the Friends Council on Education, serving as clerk of the Board and formerly as treasurer and clerk of the Finance Committee. She is the immediate past president of the Corporation of
Haverford College and serves on the Board of Managers. She was clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting from 1995-1999. She is a member of Uwchlan Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in
Downingtown, PA.
Martha and her husband, Harry, a lawyer, live in Newtown Square, PA. They have two adult children.
Their interests include gardening and outdoor activities, walking, travel, reading, and cribbage.
