In fifth grade, students grow in their ability to do independent work as they develop organizational skills to support their learning. Fifth graders are divided into two sections, grouped in various ways including skills development, for math and language arts. Standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics guide the math curriculum. Reading and writing of fiction and non-fiction, grammar and mechanics, and research projects are the focus of language arts. Social studies are integrated into the language arts program, providing rich contexts for skill development. In Homeroom groups, students study Spanish, science, music, art, physical education, and health. The Library and computer lab provide support for all academic work.
