Learning to read and write is the central task of first graders. Children begin the year at varying stages of reading and work hard to advance in a literature-rich environment. Our balanced literacy approach includes explicit instruction in decoding and phonics, a strong focus on comprehension, and daily reading workshops. Children read extensively at their independent level and receive instructional support at a higher level. During writing workshop children write daily, supported by mini-lessons on strategies, writing conventions, and the craft of writing. Our math program is based upon the NCTM standards and is taught with a hands-on approach in which children are actively engaged in problem-solving. Math skills are reinforced through games, collecting and analyzing data, and discussions of strategies for solving problems. Our social studies theme of “same and different” permeates the curriculum as children learn about the uniqueness and commonalities of all people.
