In recent years, the cloud forests of Costa Rica have been the integrating theme that permeates the fourth grade year, informing language arts, math, social studies, service projects, and the class play. Students become passionate and informed advocates of the fragile ecosystem. Students focus on descriptive and expository writing, conduct and present research, use technology to support their work (word processing, Inspiration), and deepen their familiarity with a variety of literary genres, including poetry, biography, and realistic fiction. In science, students compare temperate and tropical rainforests, analyzing the impact of plate tectonics and the water cycle. Students study mold, conduct comparison experiments, and use chemical tests to identify mysterious substances.

In conjunction with their Costa Rican studies, FSH fourth grade students conduct a service project, selling
Café Monteverde fair trade coffee grown in harmony with the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Proceeds benefit the Ann Kriebel/San Luis Project, a sustainable agriculture and cultural exchange program. The money raised has financed the installation of a fresh water system that provides clean water to the fields and homes of the farmers of Finca La Bella.
