The experiences of Kindergarteners create a platform for learning math, literacy, science, technology, and social studies. Using workshop formats for reading and writing, teachers introduce topics to the whole class; small groups and individuals progress at their own pace. Thematic units extend through the year, integrating
all subjects. Kindergarteners document their experiences through digital photography and hand-written journals. In the Monarch butterfly thematic unit, for example, students discover the lifecycle as they hatch, tag, and release the butterflies into the garden. During Meeting for Sharing, kindergarteners create a Spirit Document that expresses their hopes for the class and practice the Ice Cream Cone model of conflict resolution.
