| Lea Keil Garson, Director of Literacy and Learning Support |
Language is central to all learning. The goal of our language arts curriculum is literacy and communication. Our balanced program blends literature, phonemic awareness, phonics, whole language, and skill-based instruction to support the child’s growth in communicative skills from the early preschool years through grade 6. Mini-lessons in reading strategies as well as shared and guided reading instruction build a foundation for independent reading and literature circles. As competencies develop, children plan, write, edit and publish written work, using narrative, descriptive, poetic, expository and persuasive styles. Language and grammatical skills are taught contextually. A formal handwriting program is used in grades K-3. Sound spelling and standard spelling are introduced in the early years. A formal spelling program begins in grade 2. Fifth and sixth grade students enjoy the fruits of their early work as they communicate articulately, persuasively, and creatively, through conversation, debate, essay, poetry, letters, journals, drama and multimedia modes. All classes, grades 1 through 6, perform a play for the School. Each year, the 5th and 6th grades produce a one-act play or musical, complete with costumes, lighting, sound and sets.
