Thematic Study
Each year, all Friends School Haverford students participate in an interdisciplinary thematic study. Each class explores a different aspect of the same topic at the appropriate grade level. Themes are developed from the Quaker testimonies of Peace, Service, Simplicity, Sewardship, Equality, Community, Harmony, and Integrity.
Partner Classes
Upper and lower grades are teamed together in Partner Classes which meet regularly and work on joint projects. The purpose is to promote understanding among children of different ages. The Partners' program helps children develop friendships throughout the School. reinforcing our sense of community.
Service Learning
It is important to Friends School Haverford’s philosophy that children learn to help others through involvement in service projects. Over the years, the School as a whole and individual classes have worked on a variety of activities, including collecting food for people in shelters and clothing drives for The American Friends Service Committee, and raising funds for the American Heart Association, Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, Heifer International Program, Ann Kriebell San Luis Project, and our Sister School, Escuela Altos de San Luis, to name a few.
Drama and Performing Arts
Each year many of the grades, at the discretion of the teachers, present plays and other performance programs to their partner classes, at School assemblies, and for the enjoyment of the entire School community. For most of these events, such as the annual class plays, parents are invited to attend.
Grandfriends' Day
Grandfriends' Day, held in the fall, is an opportunity for grandparents and older friends to share a day at the School. This day becomes a celebration of the loving relationships that children experience with members of another generation. Grandparents, surrogate grandparents, and older family friends are all welcome.
Spring Concert and Celebration of the Arts
In order to showcase the breadth of the arts curriculum at Friends School Haverford, the School hosts the month-long Celebration of the Arts each spring. Students in grades 1-6 present a musical program at the Spring Concert, which is the culmination of their yearlong study in music. On the same evening, we kick-off a two-week Student Art Exhibition. Under the direction of the art teacher, a sampling of each student's artwork is exhibited throughout the School. Other performance events might include plays and vignettes in Spanish and poetry readings.
