FSH School House Scholarship Fund
School House Scholarships of $5,000 are awarded to girls and boys currently in third or fourth grade. Successful applicants will meet Friends School Haverford standards of admission, be in good academic standing in their current school, and receive positive recommendations from their current teachers. Each applicant must submit an essay, picture, collage or video clip illustrating their ideas about and interest in: Care for the Environment, Making a Difference in the World, or Peaceful Problem-Solving.

All work submitted needs to be primarily that of the student applicant. Parents should play only a supporting role in the creation of these materials.
All submissions become the property of FSH. Materials will not be returned to applicants.
The themes for all projects are as follows:

Video
Requirements
• 2-5 minutes in length
• With or without soundtrack
• Introduction by creator/applicant
• Video must be understandable on its own without supporting materials
Format
• Either a DVD that can be played in a standard DVD player, or
• A QuickTime or Windows Media Player file on a CD
Suggestion
• Action video showing principles in action
• On-camera soliloquy/speech
• Photographic slide show
• Discovery Channel-style documentary
• PowerPoint presentation with text and images (sound optional)
• Singing or playing an instrument
• Problem-solving in action
• Interview another person who demonstrates one of these themes
Essay
Requirements
• For Essay 5 paragraphs minimum
• For Poem 5 stanzas minimum
Essay and/or poems will be evaluated based on the following writing criteria:
Overall Development How well the writer communicates with the reader, shows awareness of audience, task and purpose of writing.
Organization The writer’s ability to maintain coherence throughout the essay, and create paragraphs.
Support Evidence of appropriate reasons, details, and examples to support the generalizations and conclusions of the essay.
Sentence Structure Correct usage, completeness, and variety or sophistication of sentences.
Word Choice Specific vocabulary, freshness and vividness of language.
Mechanics Correct and effective use of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
Format
• Typed or neatly handwritten

Picture or Collage
Requirements
• Original drawing or painting, using any art material (pastel, pencil, watercolor, charcoal, etc.)
• Collage using at least three different sources (such as magazines, newspapers, Internet, original photographs by applicant, yarn, pressed plant material, fabric, etc.)
Format
• Single copy on a poster board
• Poster board can be 11” x 14”, 12” x 18” or 18” x 24”
Suggestion
• An original interpretation or depiction of one of the three aforementioned topics
