History and Governance

Friends School Haverford is governed by the School Committee, responsible for the mission, philosophy, policies and strategic plan, financial health, and appointment of the Head of School. Haverford Monthly Meeting names members of the School Committee; members include parents, alumni, community leaders, and neighbors.

School Committee

The Friends School Haverford School Committee serves as a steward of the school’s mission, helping to ensure that Friends School Haverford remains a thriving, values-centered learning community for generations to come.

The School Committee is comprised of current and past parents, members of Haverford Monthly Meeting, and dedicated community members. Together, they bring a rich diversity of experiences, perspectives, and gifts while sharing a deep commitment to the school’s mission and the well-being of every child.

Working in partnership with the Head of School, the School Committee provides thoughtful guidance and oversight in areas such as strategic planning, financial stewardship, policy, and the long-term sustainability of the school. While the Committee holds the school’s mission and future in its care, it entrusts the Head of School with the leadership and daily operation of the school.

The School Committee meets regularly throughout the academic year, including an annual retreat that provides time for worshipful reflection, relationship-building, and discernment. Rather than relying solely on majority rule, Friends seek unity through careful listening, respectful dialogue, and a shared commitment to discerning the best path forward for the school community.

Grounded in the Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship (SPICES), the School Committee strives to lead with humility, courage, and care. Together with the Head of School, faculty, staff, families, and Friends, the Committee helps nurture a school where every child is known, valued, and inspired to learn, grow, and thrive.
