One-Year-Old Classroom

One-year-old

A Continuum of Care and Learning from One Year through Kindergarten

At Friends School Haverford, learning is a journey that begins with relationships. Our One-Year-Old Classroom is the first step in a thoughtfully designed continuum that carries children from their earliest school experiences through kindergarten, grounded in connection, curiosity, and a deep respect for childhood.

A Classroom Designed for One-Year-Olds

The One-Year-Old Classroom is a warm, nurturing, and carefully prepared environment designed to meet the unique developmental needs of children at this remarkable stage of life. Here, children build trust, discover their growing independence, and begin making sense of the world through their bodies, senses, and relationships. Teachers place relationships at the heart of all learning, taking time to know each child’s rhythms, cues, interests, and emerging abilities. This sense of being truly seen and valued becomes the foundation children carry with them as they move into our Two-Year-Old, Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten classrooms.

A Thoughtfully Prepared Environment

The classroom environment mirrors the thoughtful design found throughout Friends School Haverford. Natural materials, low open shelves, and beautiful, simple materials invite exploration and independence. Cozy spaces for quiet connection sit alongside open areas for movement, climbing, and early walking, preparing children for the increasingly complex explorations and projects they will engage in as they grow.

Gentle Daily Rhythms

Predictable daily routines help children feel safe and grounded.

  • A balance of active exploration and quiet moments
  • Time for rest, nourishment, and connection
  • Flexible, responsive teaching shaped by close observation

These same rhythms built on observation, reflection, and responsiveness continue through our Two-Year-Old through Kindergarten program, where learning unfolds through play, inquiry, and meaningful experiences shaped by children’s interests.

The Foundation of Belonging

Caregiving routines are honored as essential learning moments. Diapering, meals, handwashing, and rest are times for communication, trust building, and connection. This respectful approach to care evolves into the social emotional foundation that supports children as they develop empathy, cooperation, problem solving, and self-expression throughout the early childhood years.

Across every age and stage at Friends School Haverford, children experience consistency in how they are treated with patience, kindness, respect, and genuine care. By the time children reach Kindergarten, they are confident, curious learners who know how to collaborate, ask questions, persist through challenges, and see themselves as valued members of a caring community.

The One-Year-Old Classroom is not just the beginning of school. It is the beginning of belonging.
